Yesterday I decided to take my seven-year old and three-year old out to look for Wild Turkeys on Thanksgiving. We headed out to my favorite turkey location on Cow Creek Rd on the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge northwest of Austin, but due to recent rains, the main road was closed. Undeterred, we tried a backup spot on Nameless Rd near Lago Vista. We drove seven miles up the road without luck, though we spotted at least a dozen white-tailed deer. On the way back down the road, I managed to spot a dozen Wild Turkeys foraging under some pecan trees near the road.
We jumped out of the car so the kids could get a better look, and the turkeys began to run. I thought they would run across an open field, but when they got to the edge of the field they took flight, flying past us over the road. The kids were excited and we spent the next few minutes looking for pecans and having a good time before heading back to town.
The perfect bird chase for a Thanksgiving morning.
