The Bird Man of Brooklyn

Everybody loves Monk Parakeets--those green and gray South American jewels that have colonized cities across North America. But some people love them more than others. Check out this Brooklyn Daily Eagle story about Steve Baldwin, the Bird Man of Brooklyn.

Here in South Florida, there have been several incidents of neighbors complaining about noisy mobs of Monk Parakeets at backyard feeders. When we first moved here, I put out feeders my first winter and attracted many goldfinches. However, the feral Muscovy Ducks and the noisy parakeets made sure that most of the seed was spilled on the ground in just minutes! I saw my first Monks in 1988 in Dallas, Texas, where a guy had them nesting in his suburban back yard for a couple of years before the first birder noticed them. He called them "green kites." Later, they started nesting in the lights at (the first) Texas Rangers Stadium.
